Time to think about the coefficient

The old firm fans who applaud poor results by the other side in Europe are overlooking the fact that every result by a Scottish team , no matter who it is, has an impact on the coefficient used by UEFA to determine the pots or the seedings for their club in future competitions.

The further a Scottish club progresses in either the Champions or Europa Leagues determines how many qualifying rounds we have to play to enter the tournament proper.

Not so long ago we had the right to direct entry into these competitions without the need to pre qualify. Recent results by all clubs, not just the old firm, have caused the coefficient to plummet and it looks like any team will have to play all the qualifying rounds in the immediate future.

I watch all the games involving Scottish sides and speaking as a neutral I thought Celtic were robbed against Udinese. I don’t know the marking system for diving competitions but the Udinese player would have earned pretty high marks for his effort, although not as many as the Czeck republic striker in the recent Scotland game.

Whether other fans like it or not they need to back Celtic to do well in their remaining games , out of sheer self interest if nothing else, as the qualifying prospects for future competitions depend on a much needed boost to our coefficient.

Football daft for as long as I can remember. Lifelong Liverpool fan and Socialist. Has actually stood on the Anfield pitch. Played the game, refereed it and reported on it. Best playing time was at under 18 level and enjoyed indoor 5 aside until injury forced me out at 52.
