Champions League Final

It is hard to believe these days that Scotland once had a specific interest in this final as Celtic’s two appearances in it in 1967 and 1970 took place long before many of their fans were born.

The present state of Scottish football suggests that it may never happen again especially as any home grown player of ability ends up in England, with some playing in the Premiership and others in the Championship. Until recently the only two clubs which could retain players of a fairly high standard were the old firm, but even this ray of hope has been tempered by Rangers current problems which could take years to overcome.

As a keen observer of all things football it was sad for me to see Barcelona go off the boil at the wrong time which will perhaps devalue the final for some of us by the absence of the brilliant Messi.

Still the show piece game should still be a “gala” affair with three of the games premier divers taking part. It is difficult to decide which one deserves the top prize so I will leave the forum readers to decide between Drogba, Robben and Ribery.

It may not be true but to celebrate the occasion there is a rumour that the three are forming a new group called the Munich City Turf Rollers to provide the pre-match entertainment.

Football daft for as long as I can remember. Lifelong Liverpool fan and Socialist. Has actually stood on the Anfield pitch. Played the game, refereed it and reported on it. Best playing time was at under 18 level and enjoyed indoor 5 aside until injury forced me out at 52.

I remember the days with the Lisbon Lions
whom became the very 1st British and only Scottish team to win the trophy in 67′

And remember the 1970 European cup final Celtic v Feyenoord of Holland when the final was played in Milan ..

Ive spoken to Bobby Lennox outside celtic park and Bertie Auld inside Bairds bar in Glasgow since just a few years ago

Both sais as i knew that Leeds Utd then were the best team in England with many English Internationals ans Scots Internationals in their team back then and Scots like Lorimer and Bremner whom were favs to win the Semi Final of the trohpy

But Celtic then as we all know beat Leeds away 0/1 but the score that day at then Elland road shouldve been by more goals as Scotlands Champions outplayed Leeds utd Englands best then on that day ..With wee jinky johnstone running riot and leaving Norman Hunter the rugged Leeds and England defender for meat ..

In the return of that Semi played at Hampden Park this still stands as an all time British record for attendances with over 136,000 and many reckon there was many more inside the stadium that night as Celtic won that game also 3/1 and so went onto the final V Feyenoord of Holland and to be played in Milan in Italy

As sais above ive chatted with both Celtic players whom played then and both reckoned Leeds utd were a better side than Feyenoord and that Celtic went though into that final thinking it was won , having disposed of Leeds utd and as we know Feyenoord won after extra time 3/2
They deserved the win Feyenoord as Celtic didnt turn up on the day and according to both Celtic players in that final Auld and Lennox
both sais IF Celtic had to say play that final v Feyenoord knowing what they know now then Guaranteed they both said that Celtic would have won it and were a bit dissapointed even to this day that the team went into this game without a care thinking all was won
and deservedly they sais lost that final in which really Celtic were then favs to win ..
