The Light Blues have virtually ended their first season under Gerrard by recording another win in the Old Firm against Celtic in the last weekend. Rangers 2-0 win will add confidence to a squad that will try hard this summer to do what is required to be able to challenge Celtic in the title race.
The 2-0 Rangers’ success, added to the 1-0 win over the Hoops at home back in January, means that the Light Blues have completed their first home sweep over their massive rivals in 7 years.
In terms of silverware though, Celtic have managed to record another double having secure the Scottish Premiership title and also the Scottish League Cup.
They will also face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final hoping to secure a third straight domestic treble. According to Bettingoffers.cash they are the heavy favourites and can be backed at 2/5 to win. Bookmakers clearly do not expect surprised with the price of Hearts to cause an upset that is 15/2.
Even though Celtic have been dominating in recent years, clear progress have been made by Rangers under Gerrard. John Pentin, football editor at BettingOffers.Cash said ‘I firmly believe that Rangers can test Celtic in the 2019-20 season.’
Surely the squad would have to be improved and Pentin suggests that forward Kent should be retained. He has been just named the PFA Scotland’s Young Player of the Year having scored 6 goals and 6 assists in 23 league games in this campaign.
The 22 years old future with Liverpool is clearly uncertain and Rangers could be hoping to secure another season-long loan from the Merseyside club.
Pentin has also added: ‘Rangers have had great continuity in the last three or four years. This summer it is Celtic that will have to do the bigger overhaul rather than Rangers. This will give Gerrard’s an excellent opportunity to put some pressure early on in the season.’
‘Surely Steven Gerrard will need new players to improve the team but it will not be like we saw last summer when he had to rip the team up and start all over.’
‘If he can find the key players that will add quality in the needed areas, Rangers will not be too far from Celtic. He has already a good base to work with. If the board will back him to get few good players than the gap can be closed with Celtic.’
‘Rangers have an excellent core in the squad now, and the manager has already done well by doing deals with Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie. Surely there will be competition for places in the wider areas. If Rangers can retain Ryan Kent then surely they cannot be written off for the Scottish title’.
‘Unfortunately, some of the last summer signings haven’t produced the results hoped for. Some, however, have gone a long way and this is clear by looking at guys like Scott Arfield’.
‘He is a midfielder that is having such success in Scotland thanks to his ability to get beyond the striker and score goals from the middle of the pitch’.
‘He has a great feeling with Jermain Defoe and that partnership has worked fantastically well for the second goal. There aren’t many players that have the quality to do that and surely this is the way to continue to improve the Rangers team so that the gap with Celtic can be eliminated in the shortest time possible’.
